Surat Thani literally means City of the Good People. It is the largest province of the South. There are an area of 12,891 square kilometres and bordered by the Gulf of Thailand to the north and the east.

Surat Thani is located 644 Km south of Bangkok, 84 km southwest of Koh Samui, and 290 km northeast of Phuket. It is divided into 18 districts and 1 sub-district

The topography includes a high plateau and forested mountains to the west, and low basins in the center and along the eastern coast. There are a tremendous number of island along the coast.

Go to Surat Thani By Bus, Air, Train

Surat Thani is 644 km south of Bangkok, 84 km southwest of Ko Sarnui, and 290 km
northeast of Phuket.

See below under “Ko Sarnui,” the ultimate destination for most travelers passing
through the region, for more information on travel to/from Surat Thani.

Air: Thai Airways  (3/27 Karunarat Rd.,  tel. 077-272610 or  273355) flies three
times daily from Bangkok (one hour), once daily from Phuket (30  minutes,
), and twice weekly from Chiang  Mai (two hours). The airport  is 30
km  west of  town. Thai  Airways is  an
alternative to booked-out flights with Bangkok Airways.

Train: Trains depart Bangkok nine times daily and take 11-13 hours to reach  the
terminal at Phun Phin, 14 km west of Surat Thani. The most convenient  departure is the rapid  train at 1830,  which  arrives in  Phun Phin at  0600 and  al lows plenty of time  for an earty  ferry to Ko  Sarnui. Buses from  the various ferry companies meet and transfer passengers to the boat and ferry terminals.

Overnight trains should be reserved several weeks in advance. Travelers  without
reservations must often stand for several hours until a seat is vacated.

Bus: Six a/c  buses depart from   the Southern  Bus Terminal in  Thonburi  daily
07.00-09.30  and  18.00-21.00,  arriving  in 11-13  hours  at  the  Surat Thani  bus
terminal. Buses meet them and provide transfer to the various ferry piers.

Food in Surat Thani Thailand

Surat Thani is famous throughout  Thailand as home to delicious  rambutans known
as ngoh  rongrien and  giant tilam  oysters grown  in Ban  Don Bay and Tha Thong
Estuary some 30 km south of  town. Restaurants here serve the succulent  oysters
and tasty kung kuladam shrimp for as little as B8 each.

Talad Kaset: Kaset Market divides into two sections across Talad Mai Road,  with
Talad Kaset 1 containing the local bus station (Phun Phin, etc.) and Talad Kaset
2 having the long distance bus station  and  dozens of small cafes  for a  quick
bite. Baked chicken and spicy south  ern curries are popular dishes. Talad   Mai
Road. Inexpensive.

Night Market: The market near the Ban Don night ferry pier provides a convenient
spot  to  pick up  supplies  for the  slow  boat to  Ko  Sarnui. Ban  Don  Road.
Inexpensive.

Sala Rim Nam Restaurant: Rather than wait for the train on a station bench or in
the room of a decrepit hotel, check  your bags with left luggage and cross   the
wooden footbridge over the tracks. Turn right on the main street and walk  about
100 meters to the Siam City Bank on your left. The adjacent cafe is a fine place
to idle away a  few hours  in an  old-world classic constructed  on  stilts over
the Tapi River.

Sahathai Department Store: A welcome es  cape from the heat is provided   in the
a/c food court on the fourth  floor. Over 20 foodstalls ladle up  Thai, Chinese,
and Western dishes at rockbottom   prices. Open daily 0930-2130. Na  Muang  Rd.,

J. Home Bakery:  Baked goods, fresh   coffee, burgers,  and Thai fast  food  are
listed on the bilingual  menu in this a/c  cafe near the Grand  City Hotel. Open
