WAT PO BANGKOK - Thai massage school

May 28th, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Bangkok, Wat

Bangkok’s oldest  and largest  temple complex,  Wat Po  was founded  in the 16th century, when Ayuthaya  was the capital,  and radically remod  eled between 1781 and 1801  by Rama  I, who  renamed the  complex Wat  Pra Chetupon.  The area was extended  in  the 1830s  by  Rama III  in  his quest  to  establish an  open-air university. This  educational wonderland  included inscrip  tions on traditional sciences, extracts  from the  Jatakas, marble  tablets that  taught the rules of traditional Thai massage, litanies of  the rein carnations of Vishnu,  treatises on astrology and palmistry, illustrations on world geography, and rishi  figures contorted to demonstrate control  over the physical body.  In 1832 Rama til  con structed an immense chapel on these grounds to house the statue of the Reclining Buddha; Wat Po is often called the Temple of the Reclining Buddha.

Wat Po today is one of the more fascinating temple complexes in Bangkok  because of both its mystique and artistic achievement. Crammed into the courtyards is  a bewildering  number of  chapels, rock  gardens, bizarre  statuary, edu  cational tablets, bell towers,  and small chedis.  The complex has  two major highlights: the su perb hot to the right of the entrance, and the gi gantic reclining Buddha in  the  rear courtyard.  Guides  are available  at  the front  entrance  on Soi Chetupon, though their services are hardly necessary. Guides charge B150 for one visitor, B200 for two,  and B300 for three.  Air-condi tioned buses 6,8,  and 12 all stop near Wat Po, or you can take  a river boat to Tha Tien Pier. Wat Po  is open daily  0800-1700.
